Wholeness is the key theme of the anthology on environment. We are one with the natural world, not just with the millions of other living species with whom we share it. But, we are also with the elements of air, water and earth of which we are composed. Sometimes we need to stand back and view our world in perspective - from the beginnings of the universe to the littleness of our affairs. Olaf Stapledon once wrote: ...and on the skin of this little grain all the swarms of men and women have lived in labor and blindness with intermittent joy and intermittent lucidity of spirit. It is that lucidity of spirit that this book celebrates. We will be reading some twenty writings (10 in the FALL; ten in the SPRING) beginning with Katahdin by Thoreau and ending with Dimensions of Deformity by Gordon Miller. In addition we will be seeing a DVD on the Environment. The book Keeping Things Whole may be purchased from the Great Books Foundation (1-800-222-5870). Also, you should purchase Pilgrim at Thinker Creek (explanation to follow in class). There will be a charge for printing.
