In this course we will be reading (at home) and discussing (in class) four works of literature (both fiction and non-fiction) in the book: Introduction to Great Books 1 First Series. The readings for this course (including number of pages in each) are: Concerning the Division of Labor, Smith (5), Chellkash, Gorky (40), How an Aristocracy May be Created by Industry, Tocqueville (5) and Observation an Experiment, Bernard (6). New copies of this book are available from GreatBooks.org, for $16.95, plus tax and shipping. Used copies are less from Amazon and eBay. It is not necessary to take either of the other two courses in the series. Please read Concerning the Division of Labor before the first class. The final course in this series will include four more works.
