Happy 2019 to Senior Learners and welcome back to Spring Term classes!

January 04, 2019 12:51 PM | Philip Davis (Administrator)

Free Spring Term Kick-Off party on Monday, January 7th from 10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon. Meet fellow Senior Learners and instructors and enjoy the refreshments.

Several months ago SLI became a member of Marion Cultural Alliance housed in the Brick City Center for the Arts in downtown Ocala. A few words about Marion Cultural Alliance for those of you not familiar with the organization: MCA is the leading arts advocate and fundraiser for the arts in Marion County. Since 2001 MCA has given over $310,000 in cultural grants to other arts and cultural organizations in our community. Your support will help build their endowment and allow MCA to offer more cultural grants in our community each year.

Each month MCA hosts a new exhibit on the first Friday of the month, currently coinciding with First Friday Art Walk. The next exhibit begins on January 4th with an extensive private collection of Amazonian Art. The exhibit titled, “Uncovering Nature’s Great Mystery of Art, Mathematics and Science”, is brought to MCA by our own Dr. Scott Olsen, CF Professor Emeritus, Humanities Department. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Please stop by the Gallery at 23 Broadway Street anytime during the month of January to view this unique collection.

Dr. Olsen has planned many performances, lectures, and demonstrations as part of his exhibit at MCA. Senior Learners is sponsoring two of these events. The first, on January 9th, at MCA, from 10:00 AM – Noon, is a “Shamanism Discussion” by Matthew Pallamary, Mauro Reategui and Dr. Olsen. Pallamary and Reategui, both practicing shamans, will discuss their work with shamanic plant medicines in Peru. Dr. Olsen will talk about his visionary artwork collection at MCA from Pablo Amaringo and his students.

That same evening, from 7:00 PM – 9:30 PM, Czech filmmaker, Filip Zaruba will premier his film, “Bufo Alvarius – The Under Ground Secret” at the Webber Center of the College of Central Florida (next to the Dassance Fine Arts Auditorium) 3001 SW College Road. Mr. Zaruba’s film has won 11 international film festival awards. After the showing, there will be a Q&A and open-forum discussion by Mr. Zaruba and Dr. Olsen with the audience. The film is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

On January 10th there will be a painting demonstration by Alfredo Zagaceta and Mita Lozano, students of Pablo Amaringo of the USKO-AYAR Amazonian School of Art in Peru. The demonstration will be accompanied by the music of Mauro Reategui, shaman, artist, singer and musician, and Matthew Pallamary, shaman, author and drummer. Please call the Gallery at (352) 369–1500 to reserve your place for these two events at MCA. All events related to Dr. Olsen’s MCA exhibit are free and open to the public.
