    ### What Darwin Didn’t Know: The Modern Science of Evolution
    * Gwynn Pealer
    * Tuesday
    * 07-may-19 to 28-may-19
    * 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
    * $20.00

    This is a new Great Courses Program and here is its description: “Retrace Darwin’s path to his theory of evolution by natural selection, which appeared in his masterpiece The Origin of Species, published in 1859. Encounter collector Alfred Russel Wallace’s astonishing, almost identical, key insight. Detail the types of evidence, not known to Darwin, that have accumulated in the century and a half since his time, deepening and extending his ideas to a remarkable degree.” Genetics is the major understanding that has developed significantly from Darwin’s day so it is the basis for many of the lectures – how our knowledge has changed and how it impacts many areas that help support our present day understanding of Evolution. Other resources will be used to extend ideas described in the Great Course.

This course will draw on his lectures that describe the systematic way the structures of languages are studied and compared. These studies organize the 7,000 languages into families of related languages that evolved from common roots.

    Many of us are involved in traveling. We read the brochures and study Rick Steves or other books. We have interesting expectations and have determined that is the place we should go. But when we get there, we find it is not really so hot, but other places along the way were terrific and were a great surprise. I have been surprised often in my visits to 85 countries. I will share with you seven of my most surprising encounters - places that we thought would be just so-so, but ended up as unforgettable. You may have some of these experiences too. Bring them with you and we can all share and go to exotic places.

    ### How to Systematically Collect and Document Your Life Story, Even if You Are Not Going to Write Your Memoir

    * Bob Holloran

    * Wednesday

    * 19-jun-19 to 26-jun-19

    * 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM

    * $10.00

    The process of creating a table of various aspects of your life is one way to start writing a memoir. But, even if you are not interested in writing a memoir, there is value in the process of systematically documenting where you and your family: lived, worked, went to school, vacationed, and many other important aspects of your life. In collecting this information, either from your memory, archives, family and even the Internet, you will be surprised by other memories that will surface. This course will provide you tools to create this overview of your life to date.

When you go to Graceland, the home of Elvis, you will gather a new appreciation of the King. When Nashville build the Parthenon, Memphis built a replica of the pyramid like the ones in Egypt. So many interesting sites we will visit. One of my favorites is St. Jude Medical Center, which is tackling the most difficult of children’s genetic diseases. I may also take you to the Peabody Hotel to see the ducks march in to the Stars and Stripes Forever. This is a city to put on your must-visit list.

    * 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM

    Most of us are constantly collecting bits and pieces of information that we find interesting and useful. We find something useful and file it in our brain, or maybe write it on a piece of paper and put it in a stack with all the other bits of useful knowledge. Then, three weeks, or three months later we need this bit of knowledge, but we not only cannot remember it but cannot even find the piece of paper. There is a better way. Start creating your own Personal Knowledge Library (PKL). A PKL can become your long-term memory assistant. You might even call it your personal Wikipedia (or a personal Encyclopedia Brittanica). This workshop will help you get started building your PKL, what software to use, provide organizing tips, and suggest things to include. You will be given templates for user guides and equipment manuals, trip planning, and an inventory of all your digital assets.

    ### What Einstein Got Wrong, That Is, He Could Not Accept
    * Bob Holloran
    * Friday
    * 02-aug-19 to 23-aug-19
    * 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
    * $20.00

    Albert Einstein was the most prolific physicists since Isaac Newton. This course explores the implications of the theories he spawned. For example, his explanation of the photo-electric effect provided the seed from which Quantum Mechanics sprouted. But, he remained skeptical of the implications of this theory to the end of his life. Even his extreme skepticism resulted in the refinement of this theory. The lectures are by Professor Dan Hopper in his The Great Courses: What Einstein Got Wrong.
