IMPERFECT IDEAL Utopian and Dystopian Visions 2

    • Jim Coleman
    • Tuesday
    • 07-jan-20 to 28-jan-20
    • 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
    • $20.00

Throughout the ages, people have looked at their communities and dreamed of how they could be perfected. But such dreams, no matter how well-intentioned, can result in conditions far worse than what came before. The selections in Imperfect Ideals illustrate the best and worst of these utopian and dystopian visions, challenging readers to address the perennial questions of how society should be structured and governed, as well as what kind of community is most conducive to human fulfillment, both privately and in the civic arena. In addition to reading the book, we will be seeing half-hour videos entitled: Great Utopian and Dystopian Works of Literature. The book: Imperfect Ideal, may be ordered from the Great Books Foundation at GreatBooks.org. A minimum of 10 students is required for this course.

We will follow the progress of the nation as it moves through industrialization, the fight for civil rights, the Progressive movement and the imperial age. This is also the era in which the United States begins to take a more hands-on approach to world affairs. Learn about individuals such as Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson.

This course examines scientific evidence to substantiate claims of the existence of a universal god or GOD. It looks at the historical conflicts between emerging science and claims of the existence of such a god and how attempts have been made to integrate the scientific theories and faith in a god. We will examine unique characteristics of our earth that permit life and presence of humans and the likelihood that there are other locations in this or alternative universes of such goldilocks zones which would permit life as we know it. We will look at brain functions of those who experience spirituality and near death experiences and even death. Finally we will look at the relationships between these elusive concepts and a god and consciousness and attempt to see if there is any consensus that there is sufficient scientific evidence to reasonably conclude that God exists or is merely a matter of faith.

We will explore what were the circumstances that possibly led to this disaster, what were the social and medical resources at the time, how did the Plague move from place to place, what was its cause? Could this happen again? Of note, we will, at times, view some very graphic representations of what happened.

Calc, as its name declares, can calculate many answers from the numbers; subtotals, grand totals, averages, percentages and other useful information from the many combinations of records and columns. In this introductory session, we will look at navigating the virtual worksheet, adding formulas, sorting and filtering records, and formatting the screen and printed reports.

Chaos Theory has been called the third great revolution in Twentieth Century Physics after the Relativity and Quantum Theories. This course explains how Chaos Theory developed and its two primary characteristics: 1. The initial conditions of many complex systems governed by deterministic laws can never be known precisely enough to accurately predict their long-term behavior. 2. Within the apparent randomness of chaotic complex systems, there are underlying patterns, constant feedback loops, repetition, self-similarity, fractals, and self-organization. This course is based in part on lectures by Professor Steven Strogatz of Cornell from Chaos, one of The Great Courses. Pictures will be used more than formulas to explain the concepts of Chaos Theory.

Have you ever wondered why you like to spend your free time among a few close friends while your partner lives by the motto the more the merrier? According to the American Psychological Association personality refers to the individual differences in patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. The study of personality focuses on individual differences in particular characteristics of how the parts of a person come together as a whole. This class will explore personality using a biopsychosocial approach acknowledging that knowing more about one’s self has numerous benefits for well-being.

This course is all about asking the right questions. The questions that will take you past the headlines and beyond the way health news is typically reported. Headlines can be deceiving. Sometimes journalists get stories completely wrong. The course will include topics like colds, flu, vaccinations, antibiotics and medical tests. It will also help you to develop a tool kit to intelligently scrutinize Internet stories and media coverage of health and medical news without falling to the hype and hysteria. This final course is based on the remaining lectures by Dr Roy Benaroch in The Great Courses: The Skeptic’s Guide to Health, Medicine and the Media.

Biochemistry combines biology—the science of life—and chemistry, the science of molecules. Biochemistry, then, is the molecular basis of life. Every single thing that makes people alive is due to biological molecules and their interactions. This course will be based on lectures from one of The Great Courses, supplemented live lectures and resources from the Internet and Gwynn’s explanations of difficult to understand aspects of the lectures.

The United States has always been a religious land. We will explore the desire for religious freedom that drove some early settlers to America, the separation of church and state embodied in the Constitution, and the way various religions have grown and adapted in the United States. Much of our course will explore the various Christian traditions that came from Europe (Roman Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox), but we will also look at other religious faiths and their efforts to survive in a predominantly Christian nation. We will also explore the birth of movements native to the United States, such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jehovah’s Witness, Christian Science and the Nation of Islam.
