    IMPERFECT IDEAL Utopian and Dystopian Visions

    * Thursday

    * 31-oct-19 to 12-dec-19

    * 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

    * $30.00

    Throughout the ages, people have looked at their communities and dreamed of how they could be perfected. But such dreams, no matter how well-intentioned, can result in conditions far worse than what came before. The selections in Imperfect Ideal illustrate the best and worst of these utopian and dystopian visions, challenging readers to address the perennial questions of how society should be structured and governed, as well as what kind of communities are the most conducive to human fulfillment, both privately and in the civic arena. In addition to reading the book we will be seeing half-hour tapes entitled: Great Utopian and Dystopian Works of Literature. For the FIRST session please read: The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, by Ursula Le Guin. We will need a minimum of 10 and up to a maximum of 20 for the class to be held. The book Imperfect Ideal may be ordered from The Great Books Foundation (800-222-5870) or as the Kindle Edition from Amazon.

Pat Nevard, his long-term friend and traveling companion, invites Grant's many friends in Senior Learners to join in a remembrance of Grant. She is providing the food and beverages for this remembrance. Since there can be no alcohol served, it cannot be a proper Irish Wake. But, it will give Grant’s many Senior Learner friends an opportunity to remember him and his wonderful sense of humor. Grant's favorite brownies and frostings may entice you to stay for the Chocolate Class that starts at 1:30 PM. All proceeds will be donated to Hospice of Marion County in Grant’s name.

In addition to true chocolate bars, we will be tasting some bars with added ingredients, which is now the trend in chocolate. These tastings will expand your horizons and palate, as well as provide the vocabulary for describing the multitude of flavors in chocolate. Various chocolate baked goods, sauces, spreads and drinks will also be tasted and their recipes will be shared. Throughout the course Bob will share his experience in making and marketing organic-certified, raw chocolates spreads. The term "myth" is used in a number of ways--sometimes for harmless legends and tall tales, other times for shrewd misinformation or widespread fears. We will look at the roots of some social panics (such as satanic ritual abuse and alien abductions), cultural identity stories (Pilgrims and Founding Fathers), and other recurrent myths and consider whether our brains are hard-wired for irrational beliefs.

    Creating a understanding of a famous person from the ancient world is a difficult and tricky task. We will consider one of the most famous people of all time, Jesus of Nazareth, and look at what ancient texts--scriptural and secular--really say (and do not say) about him.

    Throughout the ages, people have looked at their communities and dreamed of how they could be perfected. But such dreams, no matter how well-intentioned, can result in conditions far worse than what came before. The selections in Imperfect Ideals illustrate the best and worst of these utopian and dystopian visions, challenging readers to address the perennial questions of how society should be structured and governed, as well as what kind of community is most conducive to human fulfillment, both privately and in the civic arena. In addition to reading the book, we will be seeing half-hour videos entitled: Great Utopian and Dystopian Works of Literature. The book: Imperfect Ideal, may be ordered from the Great Books Foundation at GreatBooks.org. A minimum of 10 students is required for this course.

    The period from the end of the Civil War to World War I was a defining moment in United States history. From the trauma and pain of the Reconstruction era, the nation struggled to become unified once again. We will follow the progress of the nation as it moves through industrialization, the fight for civil rights, the Progressive movement and the imperial age. This is also the era in which the United States begins to take a more hands-on approach to world affairs. Learn about individuals such as Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson.

    This course examines scientific evidence to substantiate claims of the existence of a universal god or GOD. It looks at the historical conflicts between emerging science and claims of the existence of such a god and how attempts have been made to integrate the scientific theories and faith in a god. We will examine unique characteristics of our earth that permit life and presence of humans and the likelihood that there are other locations in this or alternative universes of such goldilocks zones which would permit life as we know it. We will look at brain functions of those who experience spirituality and near death experiences and even death. Finally we will look at the relationships between these elusive concepts and a god and consciousness and attempt to see if there is any consensus that there is sufficient scientific evidence to reasonably conclude that God exists or is merely a matter of faith.
