    Too many people believe that they simply aren’t good at math. But what if you could learn to see mathematical problems in new and helpful ways? What if you could return to difficult mathematics topics from your past with renewed power, ease, and joy? The art of thinking visually is a key component to mathematical success. This course is based on lectures by James S. Tanton, Ph.D., Mathematician‐at‐Large, Mathematical Association of America from one of The Great Courses.

    Understanding the Quantum World and How It Was Discovered I

    * Bob Holloran

    * Friday

    * 06-sep-19 to 11-oct-19

    * 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

    * $30.00

    This course is the first of two Fall Term courses. The microscopic world of particles of atoms, electrons, and photons—is ruled by quantum mechanics. It is a wild world where particles become waves, waves become particles, and our understanding of how physical objects behave is challenged to the core. This course and its follow on course explore the fascinating findings scientists have uncovered about how quantum particles operate. These courses rely primarily on lectures by Purdue University Professor Erica W. Carlson from The Great Courses (TGC): Understanding the Quantum World. Without resorting to mathematics, she provides a thorough introduction to and understanding of the strange quantum world that exists at the scale of atoms. In parallel with Professor Carlson's lectures, the history of how quantum mechanics evolved from 1900 to the 1950s will be told through the work and lives of 12 Nobel Prize winners. These courses do not require an understanding of mathematics. However, supplemental resources will be provided for those who seek a more rigorous understanding of the concepts and methods of quantum mechanics.

    The idea that life is constructed in the mind and that living is essentially a series of experiences in which organisms think, act, and react, is contrasted with compelling scientific evidence that contradicts this view. In this course we will explore the notion that feelings are far more important than usually given credit for. The budding field of social neuroscience has uncovered surprising truths about the ways in which humans feel their way through life.

    It has been said that friendships come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. Looking for a friendship must be as intentional as choosing any aspect of your life. Conflicts can arise, former friends move and interests change. It is important to look at transitions, but also to look at friendship itself and why we never out grow the need for positive relationships. We will also discuss the value and strategies involved in making new friends in adulthood.

    Mindfulness—awareness of present experience with acceptance—is a deceptively simple way of relating to the contents of our minds that has been successfully practiced to alleviate psychological suffering and enhance emotional well-being for over 2,500 years. Cutting-edge scientific research and rapidly accumulating clinical experience are now validating what ancient wisdom traditions have long taught: that mindfulness practice is an effective antidote to our hardwired propensity for psychological distress and is a reliable pathway to increased wisdom, compassion, and fulfillment. This course is based on lectures by Harvard Medical School Professor Ronald D. Siegel from The Great Courses course of the same name.

While the class will stand alone, it will be helpful for understanding the second session of What Darwin Didn't Know, which begins on 10/22.

    What Darwin Didn’t Know: The Modern Science of Evolution 2

    * Tuesday

    * 22-oct-19 to 12-nov-19

    * 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

    * $20.00

    This course is a continuation of one during Summer Term. It is based on a new course from The Great Courses. Here is its description: “Retrace Darwin’s path to his theory of evolution by natural selection, which appeared in his masterpiece The Origin of Species, published in 1859. Encounter collector Alfred Russel Wallace’s astonishing, almost identical, key insight. Detail the types of evidence, not known to Darwin, that have accumulated in the century and a half since his time, deepening and extending his ideas to a remarkable degree.” Genetics is the major understanding that has developed significantly from Darwin’s day, so it is the basis for many of the lectures–how our knowledge has changed and how it impacts many areas that help support our present day understanding of Evolution. Other resources will be used to extend ideas described in the lectures from The Great Courses. Provisions will be made for those students who did not take the first course to learn what they missed.
