What Darwin Didn’t Know: The Modern Science of Evolution 2
* Gwynn Pealer
* 22-oct-19 to 12-nov-19
* 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
This course is a continuation of one during Summer Term. It is based on a new course from The Great Courses. Here is its description: “Retrace Darwin’s path to his theory of evolution by natural selection, which appeared in his masterpiece The Origin of Species, published in 1859. Encounter collector Alfred Russel Wallace’s astonishing, almost identical, key insight. Detail the types of evidence, not known to Darwin, that have accumulated in the century and a half since his time, deepening and extending his ideas to a remarkable degree.” Genetics is the major understanding that has developed significantly from Darwin’s day, so it is the basis for many of the lectures–how our knowledge has changed and how it impacts many areas that help support our present day understanding of Evolution. Other resources will be used to extend ideas described in the lectures from The Great Courses. Provisions will be made for those students who did not take the first course to learn what they missed.
